Curious about lash extensions?

How long is the life of a natural lash?

Like any other hair follicle on our body, our lashes have a natural growth cycle. The length of this cycle differs from person to person but typically will last 8 - 12 weeks.

There are 3 stages to this growth cycle:

  1. Anagen Phase: This is the phase is which your lashes are actively growing. The lashes will grow to a specific length then stop.
  2. Catagen Phase: Also known as the transition phase, this occurs when the lash has stopped growing and the hair follicle begins to shrink.
  3. Telogen Phase: The final phase is also known as the "resting phase". It's the longest cycle. This is when lashes have grown to their full potential and are resting at their full length. Eventually, during this resting phase, the eyelashes will fall out followed by a new one growing in behind it, starting the whole growth cycle over.

While it might be tempting to ask for the longest, curliest lash extensions available, those could do the most damage if your own lashes can't support them. Applying extensions that are too heavy or too long for the natural lash will result in premature shedding and will take longer for your natural lash to grow back.  We will determine the weight, length, and curl of the eyelash extensions to be applied during your consultation at your initial application appointment.

What is "shedding" ?

Believe it or not, all of the hair on our bodies sheds, including our eye lashes. Shedding is the natural cycle of hair loss, regrowth, and regeneration.  On average we lose between 5 - 10 lashes per day. That's about 20% of our lashes each week! It sounds like a lot, right?  No worries! When we lose a natural lash there is one behind it pushing itself out ready to grow. Typically we lose most of our lashes and hair during "shedding season" in the fall and spring. As you can guess, this affects the wear of our lash extensions, because when our natural lash sheds, the lash extension attached to that lash falls as well. The natural life of a lash is approximately 60 to 90 days.

Can I wear make-up with my extensions?

volume lashes

Yes! You can wear make-up with your extensions, as long as the make-up you apply is not in close proximity to the lash line or near the glue, which is on the base of the lash extensions. ALL oil based and glycol based products (eyeliner, eyeshadow, primers, etc) should be avoided at all costs if you want to keep your lash extensions looking their best...this also holds true if you do not want to make weekly visits for your fills!

There is no need for mascara. This is why we have lash extensions, right? Putting mascara on your extensions could threaten the life of the extension by weakening the glue. This could also put more weight on your fragile lashes causing premature fall out, and as a result take the lashes longer to grow back.

Do I have to clean my lashes regularly?

Yes! I can not stress this enough! It is very important to keep your lashes clean while wearing eyelash extensions!! Lashes are affected by the same daily dirt and grime that the rest of our skin is. over time this will cause a build up of nasty. This includes any make-up residue that isn't removed daily, goo from our eyes getting stuck between the lashes, dead skin cells that fall into our lashes etc. Sounds pretty gross, huh? All of the above factors will also affect the life of your lash extensions. any buildup left on our lashes at the end of the day will cause the glue to be compromised and that equals fall out. Please also make sure your lashes are clean before your fill appts. this will leave more time for your artist to focus on getting you all filled up with gorgeous new lashes!
